LAIK
Vocally virtuosic, compositionally kaleidoscopic and a ubiquitous communicator, Laik is a harmonious, spirited soul who combines song, dance and visuals to provide audiences with an exciting and transcendent experience.
Laik’s imaginative and introspective nature has fed the formation of a somewhat mysterious performance character over her 12-year career; often described as a shape-shifter, she has performed and released music by former names Hannah Macklin, MKO Sun, Ha Na and Bastard Amber.
Now choosing to live her art with more of an outward focus, Laik steps fully into her new persona.
Favouring fronting bands over playing solo, Laik has collaborated with a plethora of musicians from around Australia and beyond. Currently based in Brisbane, her latest band features Brandon Mamata (guitar), Steele Chabau (bass) and Sam Mitchell (drums).
Their live shows range from moments of quiet introspection to raucous mayhem. Stylistically, think refined R&B/pop vocals singing world scales with moments of opera and rock over metal-tinged funk riffs and progressive jazz ideology, where improvisation, freedom and playfulness are welcomed and explored.
With a background in theatre, Laik also incorporates dance and theatrical elements into her shows and videos, as well as visually stimulating costumes and stage design; all hinting at the psychedelia she has discovered not through substances but her own practices and devotion.
Off stage, Laik facilitates group singing sessions, combining meditative and communicative techniques to create calm spaces, where participants can access parts of their voices (and in turn their spirits) that may have become dull.
